Welcome to THE BEASTS BENEATH THE WINDS, a middle grade anthology & compendium of mythical creatures from Southeast Asian lore, set to be published by ABRAMS in Fall 2025!
From mawas to merlions, from the ky lan to the kapre, the legends of Southeast Asia, populated with a whole menagerie of colourful beasts that inspire awe and fear, will be explored through stories from: Brandon Hoang, Dow Phumiruk, Erin Entrada Kelly, Gail D Villanueva, Greg Van Eekhout, Hanna Alkaf, Jesse Q Sutanto, June CL Tan, Mae Respicio, Moniza Hossain, Nadia Mikail, Shing Yin Khor, Van Hoang, Veeda Bybee and VT Bidania, with illustrations by Jes and Cin Wibowo!
The best part? I’m giving two aspiring, unagented Southeast Asian authors the chance to be part of this brilliant line-up! All I need from you is a 2,000-4,000 word short story where your protagonist encounters a creature from Southeast Asian mythology or folklore in the present day. CONTEST TERMS (PLEASE READ BEFORE SUBMITTING!)
This Short Story Contest (Contest) is operated and promoted by Hanna Alkaf. By entering the Contest, you agree to these terms of use.
In these terms of use when I refer to:
● myself, I might use “I” “us,” “I,” or “our”
● The person entering the Contest, I might use “the entrant,” “the author,” “you,” “your,” or “user.”
● The short story Contest, I might use “the Contest.”
1. The Contest
Writers then have until July 31st , 2023 to submit a story based on a creature of Southeast Asian myth or folklore. Submitted stories (Entries) should be between 2,000 – 4,000 words and written in English.
Entry submissions are free of charge. I am not responsible for the content submitted to the Contest.
2. The Prizes
The prize is the chance to be published in the Anthology THE BEASTS BENEATH THE WINDS, to be published by ABRAMS in Fall 2025, which comes with a USD1,000 fee, pending a signed Contributor Agreement and the terms therein are fulfilled. There are no alternative prizes and prizes are not transferable. The selection of two winners is at my sole discretion, and I am not required to select a winner if the criteria, as determined by me solely, is not met.
3. Entering the Contest
Please send your story, with the subject line: “Anthology Contest” to beastsofsea@gmail.com by July 31st, 2023 at 11:59pm EST. Only Entries that are submitted on before the Closing Date/Time will be eligible for the Contest.
All Entries must be the original work of the user submitting the story, must be written in English and must not infringe the copyright or intellectual property rights of any other party. I accept no responsibility if entrants fail to abide by these Terms of Use, and entrants agree to indemnify me against any claim by any third party arising from any breach of these terms of use.
Submissions must not contain defamatory, obscene, graphic, explicit, offensive, or any other such unsuitable material, and I reserve the right to disqualify Entries containing such matter.
4. Use of Submissions
Each entrant retains the copyright and credit to your story, and I will make no other use of your story without your prior written consent.
5.Eligibility
The Contest is open to all writers over the age of 18, who self-identify as Southeast Asian. For the purposes of this Contest, Southeast Asia is defined as covering the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
By entering the Contest, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and eligible to claim any prizes you may win. I may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the Contest.
Only one entry per person is permitted.
Entries not submitted in accordance with these terms and all other rules and directions given by me, or Entries that are incomplete or illegible (as determined in our sole discretion) will not be eligible.
6. Judging
The judging will be comprised of myself, and any contractors, colleagues, or any other people as determined by me at my sole discretion. The decision of the judge(s) is final, and at my sole discretion. No correspondence or discussion will be entered into by us in relation to that decision.
Winners will be notified by email by the end of August 2023.
I will make all reasonable efforts to contact the Winners. If a Winner cannot be reached within a period of one week following the first attempt, I reserve the right to withdraw the prize from the original Winning entry and to award the prize to another eligible entrant.
7. Privacy and Use of Information
I will use any personal information that you give me in accordance with the law and only for the purposes of the Contest, in the ways described in these Terms of Use. I may disclose your name and details for any marketing or other purposes, only if you indicate your consent.
As described above, winning entries may have their name publicised for promotional purposes.
8. All the Rest
I am not liable for any damage, loss or disappointment suffered by you taking part or not being able to take part in this Contest, or from being unable to claim your prize.
In the event of unforeseen circumstances, I may alter, amend or stop running the Contest without prior notice. I reserve the right to change these terms at any time.
